Nuova acquisizione del Museo del Saxofono: un rarissimo sax baritono Conn, modello “Transitional”, matricola 227957 costruito nel 1929.
Si tratta di un modello estremamente raro e antesignano del famoso modello 12M. Il corpo è placcato oro satinato, le chiavi sono oro lucido, l’incisione floreale è molto estesa e ricopre l’intero fronte della campana.
I baritoni Conn divennero una scelta quasi obbligata per i saxofonisti professionisti dell’epoca ed anche oggi rimane il più apprezzato tra tutti i modelli per la sua grande versatilità in un’ampia varietà di generi musicali dal combo jazz alla big band, dalla musica classica al rock. Tra i musicisti degni di nota che hanno suonato baritoni Conn spiccano Harry Carney e Leo Parker ma senz’altro il più famoso baritonista a suonare con i modelli Conn è stato Gerry Mulligan. Egli fu uno dei musicisti più importanti dello strumento e contribuì a decretare il successo di questo modello e qualificarlo come il sax baritono più ricercato dai musicisti jazz. Il suo virtuosismo e la sua abilità hanno contribuito a consolidare la sua reputazione come uno dei baritonisti jazz più talentuosi della sua epoca.
Rispetto a tutti gli altri baritoni, sia quelli della stessa epoca che i modelli più moderni come i Selmer Mark VI, questo modello si distingue per il suo tono ricco e caldo e per l’eccellente proiezione. Il suo design unico e la maestria artigianale con il quale è stato costruito lo rendono ancora uno strumento estremamente ricercato da tutti i saxofonisti e collezionisti di oggi.
New acquisition of the Saxophone Museum: a very rare Conn baritone sax, “Transitional” model, serial number 227957 built in 1929.
This is an extremely rare model and a forerunner of the famous 12M model. The body is satin gold plated, the keys are polished gold, the floral engraving is very extensive and covers the entire front of the bell.
Conn baritones became an almost obligatory choice for professional saxophonists of the time and even today it remains the most appreciated of all models for its great versatility in a wide variety of musical genres from jazz combo to big band, from classical music to rock.
Notable musicians who have played Conn baritones include Harry Carney and Leo Parker but undoubtedly the most famous baritonist to play with Conn models was Gerry Mulligan. He was one of the most important musicians of the instrument and contributed to the success of this model and qualifying it as the most sought-after baritone sax by jazz musicians. His virtuosity and skill helped solidify his reputation as one of the most talented jazz baritonists of his era.
